Urinebank.nl is a place where supply and demand for cow urine meet. Cow urine is rich in nitrogen and potassium, making it an excellent fertilizer substitute for plants. The innovative CowToilet (by Hanskamp Agrotech) collects the urine directly under the cow's tail. Because the urine doesn't come into contact with the manure on the barn floor, it remains pure. This also prevents ammonia emissions, which are created when urine and manure come into contact. This preserves the nitrogen in the urine. A double win! Because most dairy farmers have a nitrogen surplus, it's more attractive to dispose of urine instead of liquid manure. This allows the dairy farmer to retain phosphate and organic matter in the cycle and thus remove nitrogen in a targeted manner. This is a double win for both the dairy and nursery sectors. The dairy farmer sells the cow urine to a farm, which can become more sustainable by using more natural fertilizers and less (polluting) synthetic fertilizer. This greens two sectors.
